okay, see here, dear ones, i must confess, tuesday was an absolute EPIC FAIL at pictures. i know i know i know. i am very sorry but if it makes things better wednesday and thursday are full of pics and so will the days that follow. "please to be kind" to this girl.
after some cornflakes and almond milk, arun, rheea and i went to see this hindi bollywood movie called ishaqzaade.
the movie is entirely in hindi without subtitles so before going, rheea had me read this parody of the movie that actually is a decent account of the actual movie, too [warning: the language is a bit crass. if you're uncomfortable with that, i'd suggest bypassing this entry]:
the movie itself was actually really interesting. rhee helped by explaining some of the dialogue throughout the movie but one of the best things about bollywood films is that their expressionism is so intense so often that you can get a lot from body language and etc. i really enjoyed the film and, like the schoolgirl i can sometimes somewhat be, developed a bit of a crush on the main actor.
here is the really interesting thing about this film, though: ishaqzaade is a slang word here in india that loosely translates to an intense passionate lover. the big conflict between these two lovers, the source of all their intensity, is their differing families and the inexcusable love that they share for someone not of their own religion. the movie in itself is a somewhat poorly developed love story... totally following the romeo and juliet theme.... but something about the depiction of small town north indian politics and the added intensity of differing religious beliefs ended up creating a legitimacy and added layer to the expected fluff of a love story.
also, the music was way too fun! here's a video of the song rheea and i have been prancing around to all week:
after the movie, we met up with carlos and pd and molly in town at commercial street. we bought sarees for the wedding.
so, sari shopping was my first moment of... okay, i have no idea what to do at all right here. you walk in and get seated on these sweet little pouf chairs and then shopworkers show you material after material after material after material. like so much. and they're all beautiful and amazing and there are so many colors and patterns and materials and so much bustling. and in the middle of all the beauty and all the chaos, i froze. i had no idea what to pick, what i wanted, what i should want, anything. and of course, the shopworkers speak very limited english so that probably didn't help me calm down faster. it was definitely one of those moments. odd that out of everything, it was in a sari shop. ha. anyways, after that initial ten minutes, rheea picked this beautiful pink net sari with purple and silver accents and i ended up finding a seafoam green net one with gold and silver beading and trim. both of them are really rather lovely and so many of you would be absolutely and completey shocked by the levels of color i'm sporting these days. [for example, i'm wearing teal leggings and hot pink bangles right now. i mean bright effing teal. i kid you not.] when in rome right? .... or when in india? whatever, you know what i mean.
after sari shopping, rheea and i came home, did some work, and spent most of the night out on the terrace, watching the sky and having very us type conversations.

Oh god! I had to stop reading that! Spoiler alert that one. It is the whole story. Rheea updates FB everytime she watches it. Some day I will torrent it or something and watch. Energies saved for MIB3 and Shanghai (also an Hindi movie). Till then I shall leave that parody in the middle.
ReplyDeleteTwice that I have purchased sarees alone, I was in and out in 10 mins. You just pick the one, whose colors and design you like, and of course in budget.
